Alien Code
The idea behind the film boils down to one question: how would beings from a fourth spatial dimension see our world? It’s a great premise, and I loved it. Unfortunately, the execution is shaky. The script often feels like it was written by a child, and there are far too many moments that fall apart as soon as you think about them. The secret agents are cartoonish stereotypes. Then there is the scene where the protagonists “break into” a supposedly ultra-secret base. Seriously? No perimeter, no barbed-wire fence, no guards — they simply walk in through a white hatch on a hillside.
The whole cryptography angle was another disappointment. It comes up again and again in the dialogue, but the film never really explores the code. I wish they had brought in a consultant to help work it into the script — someone who could give the characters real mathematical ideas and terminology to talk about, and make those conversations mean something. Then again, you can tell the film didn’t have much of a budget.
